Prevent and reduce the risks of sedentary life

What are those risks? I know in this note the projections for the health of the people and how much incidence have the daily habits in the consequences that it causes.

For some time, science has been concerned with investigating and disseminating the strong correlation between a sedentary lifestyle and different health problems such as obesity, high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, heart and cerebrovascular problems.

The sedentary lifestyle is an absolutely critical problem that no person can ignore. As a habit and lifestyle, it facilitates the appearance of noncommunicable diseases, that is, pathologies that are not transmitted through an infectious process.

Numbers that worry

The projections indicate that, by the year 2020, 75% of the deaths will have their origin in non-communicable diseases. This means that almost eight out of ten people will lose their lives as a result of diseases related to the neglect of risk factors. This number should move us, alarm us, encourage us to reflect on our habits and act accordingly because these diseases find their breeding ground in what we do, or better, in what we do not do, in the lack of attention to the factors that trigger the risk of contracting these pathologies.

How sedentary lifestyle is expressed

Human beings have eminently social characteristics. For this reason, it is very difficult for us to disaggregate the biological determinants, our behaviors, the social conditioning factors. If we are alone, we eat less than if we are accompanied.

If we have a variety of foods, we eat more than if there is only one type. If children insist that we should eat everything on the plate, we learn to ignore the biological signs of satiety, signs, on the other hand, which in themselves are not very intense.

In parallel to this, the decrease in physical activity typical of sedentary lifestyle awakens a sense of lethargy that, sooner or later, leads to isolation and, eventually, depression. Likewise, it favors physical decreases:

  • aerobic capacity is reduced.
  • fatigue is reached faster.
  • the ability to metabolize food becomes slower and deficient because the body rioritizes generating reserve tissue.
  • hormonal imbalances appear (for example, in the production of insulin or thyroid hormones), and so on.

Receive help

If we are leading a sedentary life, if it is difficult to organize our diet, if we do not know how to start changing our habits or we are not entirely clear which habits are better than others, it is necessary to ask for help to prevent and reduce the risks in this way of life.
