What to do and when?
Just 10 minutes of exercise a day could make a difference in sleep duration and quality, according to the survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation nonprofit.
"We discovered that exercise and good sleep go together, hand in hand," said Max Hirshkowitz, sleep researcher and president of the survey working group.
"We also find a gradual increase in the quality (of sleep), depending on how much exercise is done, so that if you do a lot of exercise, we discover a better quality of sleep." For people who do not exercise, we find that they occur more sleep problems, "he added.
Previous research has shown the impact of exercise on sleep, but Hirshkowitz, a professor at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, said this is the first survey that details the benefits of exercise in a representative sample of the United States.
People who described themselves as sports practitioners reported sleeping better than their more sedentary counterparts, although the amount of sleep, an average of just under seven hours, was the same.
Fight to stay awake
Nearly half of Americans reported having insomnia on an occasional basis, and 22% suffer from this disorder that may be caused by stress, anxiety, pain and medication, all or almost every night, according to the foundation.
In addition to a poorer sleep, those who do not practice sports are also less likely to have good or excellent health compared to the more active and had more trouble staying awake while driving and eating.
Sedentary people reported having nearly three times more difficulty staying awake during the day than the more active. They also took more naps and had more symptoms of sleep apnea, a disorder that causes shallow breathing or pauses in breathing during sleep, than athletes.
More than 44% of non-practitioners had a moderate risk of having sleep apnea, a higher percentage than the active people interviewed.
The survey also seemed to discredit the idea that exercising at the first or last hour of the day could have an adverse impact on sleep by showing that being active at any time of day was better than being sedentary.
"Exercise is beneficial for sleeping," said Barbara Phillips, a member of the survey's working group, in a statement.
