LUPINES

Lupins & Vitamin E

Lupine seeds have been considered of great nutritional value due to their high content of proteins (39%), lipids (17%), carbohydrates (35%), mineral salts of silicon, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, manganese and zinc. Lupine seeds are eaten cooked, previously macerated in water and salt. One popular use of lupine seeds is to soothe the rheumatic pain related to processes involving uric acid (gout).
Gout is characterized by high levels of uric acid in the blood, which leads to the precipitation of urates in the form of small needles in the joints, thus producing very painful arthritis. The parts most affected are the interphalangeal joints, the metatarsal and inflammation of the big toe.

Properties
Specific scientific information is not yet available on which compounds are linked or related to the activity of lupines. The information obtained from current research indicates that these would be chemical structures similar to steroids. Other studies aim to show that a molecule contained in the extract of lupines, which is related to alkaloids, could inhibit the synthesis of uric acid or favor its elimination. That is the reason why lupine seeds are popularly used as a coadjuvant in the treatment of rheumatic pain.
